Class Poems

All of the following poems were written by the students in the Senior English class I taught at Ewing High School in the fall of 1999. Although few of them would consider themselves poets, their talents speak for themselves. -- E. F. Winerock

Visual-Vocab #79

I must slake this insatiable thirst,
       I must slake it before it gets worse.
The hermetic bond which we once had,
       Is now transitory which makes me sad.
Pungent and facetious my attitude might be,
       But a salubrious life is what I foresee.
Your rampart of love has protected me,
       But I am almost a man which you don’t wanna see.
I know you’re disinterested in what I have to say,
       But I must fend for myself, and so comes the day.
Life has goaded me to prove myself a man,
       But I am your "ingenuous" boy, for this you won’t stand.

-- Bryan Reed

What is Love?

Andre

Love is like a dove flying high and free,
Love is not supposed to die like a dying tree;
Love is also the feeling for one to another,
Love is not to be like a cold shower;
Love is a river roaring on and on,
Love is not a job or a duty that can be done;
Love is free like a growing tree
    that we have for one another,
    like a shower of blessing,
    no matter how the bond breaks.

Billy

Love is caring, being there, trust, risking.
Love is not sex, (unless it is committed love that involves sex)
Love is also good days, good feelings, good times.
Love is not hate, hatred, dishonesty, unkindness,
Love is happiness, understanding, helping, working out bad times, expressing love in good ways.
Love is not selfish,
Love is Love.

Bob

Love is what you share with someone you care about;
Love is not when you are just attracted to the person because of sex.
Love is also when you would do anything for that person;
Love is not something that can just go away.
Love is when you put that person before yourself.
Love is not mistreating that person by not
caring about their feelings, or not being faithful.
Love is the most wonderful thing that could happen to a person.
